Review: Shandong Mama

Shandong Mama needs no introduction. Mama is known for her Shan Dong dumplings, proven with a runner up title in the Time Out 2014 awards Bang for Buck category.

My eating compatriot and I decided to lunch in the city one day, with me suggesting Shandong Mama. Located in Mid City Arcade, this dumpling joint was a typical casual Asian eatery. No fuss, no frills - you sit down, you get a menu, you order and your food arrives in a timely fashion. You can easily finish a meal in under an hour - perfect for those office lunch breaks.

Greediness got the better of us and we ordered three dumplings and one appetiser:

Sweet and sour shredded cabbage salad with a dash of sesame oil

Sweet and tangy, this refreshing appetiser certainly opens up your appetite. Only the core of the cabbage is used for this dish to maintain a natural sweetness.

Pork fried dumplings

Fried dumplings at Mama's are rectangular-shaped and stuck together like giant Kit-Kats when served. The bottom of the dumpling is slightly charred giving it that crunchy texture. The pork fried dumplings we had were delicious - well-seasoned, crispy, juicy filling.. what more can you ask for in a fried dumpling?

For the steamed dumplings -

Fish dumplings

Prawn, black fungus and chives dumplings.

The must-have fish dumplings were amazing!

Both dumplings were yum, but my favourite was the fish dumplings. It felt like a simple, homely dish but the process is far from it. Made by hand (and a labour of love), the soft and silky fish is mixed with ginger, chives and coriander and wrapped in a thin layer of skin.

We were completely stuffed by the end of the meal. I can't wait to go back for my next dumpling fix!

Verdict: Amazing home-made quality dumplings under $10. Whether it's lunch, dinner or a snack you're after - Shandong Mama caters for all.
